A University of Central Lancashire occurs as university based in Preston, Lancashire, with extra campuses inside Carlisle and Penrith. A Preston campus has around 35,000 students, making it one of a big universities in the United Kingdom. Prior to 1992, it had been Preston Polytechnic since September First 1973 then Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984. Prior to so it was Harris College & antecedently, Harris Institute. Colleges of education were added in the Seventies from either Poulton-le-Fylde and Chorley.

In August First 2004, it took control of the previous Northumbria University campus in Carlisle, which got as much as 400 students.

In todays world, 'UCLAN', when these are informally known, as well validates degree courses for partner institutions like a art school, Cumbria Institute of the Arts.
